Onward, Christian Soldiers!
This morning i awoke to some North Vancouver bylaw officer pinning a ticket on my windshield as it was street cleaning morning. OK, fair enough…I’m not used to rules like that anymore having lived on bowen island for 24 years now. Can’t say i venture in the city that often.
BUT NEXT came a bylaw officer writing me up something for sleeping in my van on the street. I burst into tears but the young man was compassionate and told me it was only a warning PLUS he called the Sally Ann and suggested I stick around and talk with the guy.
So I waited and a Sally Ann van pulled up and the first thing the guy did after he shook my hand was give me a bag of groceries!!! then he told me where i could park in north van overnight (yup, good old Wallyword allows this in the States and now I know they do it in North Vancouver). He handed me his card and suggested i call the advocate from the Canadian Mental Health Association as he says she’s awesome. And so I’ll do that, another day.
I used to tag along with my mom when she canvassed in Victoria years ago for the Sally Ann. And I did a few years on my own on Bowen. Guess I racked up some good samaritan points for having done that 😀
Anyways, the Sally Ann guy is well aware of the inadequate facilities programs etc. because of Premier Vanderzallm’s cuts to mental health years ago so he could pad the Expo ’86 budget. Gordon Campbell’s no different with his Olympics and we all know it. If you have one of those special b.c. license plates that goes to support the Olympics, just know i think you’re nuts…..too bad there’s no room for you on the psycho ward though.
So thank you Sally Ann, you and the compassionate bylaw officer gave me a good day and restored my faith in humanity – for the time being :D.
