Bowen Island Clown – no one nose like a nose can nose

One of Bowen’s beloved islander’s is Paul Hoosen, aka Doc Willikers. Paul’s one of those naturally good hearted people and spends a lot of time cheering up kids at Vancouver’s Children’s Hospital.

A few days ago Paul arrived at the ticket booth ten minutes before the cut off of sales for ferry time. He went to pay with his credit card and the ticket woman refused him, saying only , repeatedly, that it was cut off time. The five or so passengers behind Paul all argued. Tired from a long day, Paul ran past and onto the ferry ramp, the upstairs to the cafeteria where they sold him a ticket. He went back downstairs to show proof to the crew, where it was announced ‘too late, the cops have been called’.

Sure enough a West Van cop came aboard. He asked Paul twice to get off the boat and when Paul held his ground he was tackled and cuffed. I think this cop gets the bacon trophy for the boring post of West Van.

In protest, islanders have taken to wearing red noses aboard the ferry….all proceeds from sales of the noses go to Paul’s defence fund.

Bowen Island – there may be lots of yuppies here now but there’s enough of the regular folk to help out a Bowenian. A silver lining in a typical B.C. Ferry cloud.

How absolutely ludicrous! Fucking BC ferries – they just can’t get their act together. They should never have privatized it, either. I think things have gone way downhill after that happened.

  • 2. harpervalley  |  October 4, 2007 at 10:03 am

coyote….yer right, things have gone way down hill. perhaps that’s part of the campbell/hahn union busting plan. shitty service/incidents……crew takes the flack….morale goes down further…..public more outraged….you get the picture.

  • 3. Q  |  October 4, 2007 at 1:28 pm

Jesus, that is a sad way to treat anyone.

I went to BowenOnline and see you’ve already started a class action suit?

  • 4. Bruce  |  October 4, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Stupid stupid stupid, he never should have been treated that way. BC Ferries has a history of poor public relations (and bad food), sometimes funny too. I remember a short-lived ad campaign they did with the slogan: “Cruise the Straights with BC Ferries”. Fags like me live for shit like that, they’re so clueless.

  • 5. harpervalley  |  October 4, 2007 at 3:06 pm

Q, class action is only being pondered at this point…i don’t know if it would realistically be a go. i think our best bet is to invite competition….and i put it to washington ferry group but they have no plans of expanding right now (the squamish are building a new port on the north shore , as for bowen there’s really only one other place for a dock unless b.c. ferries were willing to lease theirs).

bruce….haha, i must have been living in alberta then, but it’s classic! since becoming a private corp. they’ve gone even more downhill with david ‘henchman’ hahn at the helm. who’s the real clowns?

  • 6. Wandering Coyote  |  October 4, 2007 at 7:31 pm

    Bruce: unbelievable!

Man, BC Ferries sell the BEST Nanaimo Bars on the planet, though!

  • 7. harpervalley  |  October 4, 2007 at 8:21 pm

coyote…..now that i have to agree with 😀

  • 8. RossK  |  October 4, 2007 at 8:44 pm

    Not me.

    My grandma’s were better.

And one of her other grandson’s still works for B.C. Ferries.

Wow, not very smart of BC Ferries, I’m glad the Bowen Islanders are protesting.

Can they protest the Sunshine Breakfast while they’re at it? Or has that gone the way of all bad things?

  • 10. RossK  |  October 4, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    Good point JJ–

    It’s neither sunny nor breakfast.

Which reminds of the time my friend British Steve made the mistake of buying himself a Tahiti Treat in an effort to alleviate a hangover.

Upon taking the first swig he gagged, spat and threw the bottle in the nearest trashcan.

He then uttered the following immortal words (in a cockney accent):

“That was not from Tahiti and it was not a Treat!”

Don’t get me started on the “Sunshine Breakfast”. In 2001 I boarded the ferry in Horseshoe Bay with a couple of friends, one from Vancouver and one from Toronto. We ordered breakfast, I ordered the sunshine breakfast, it looked like the signature dish on their menu so how could I go wrong? Well let me tell you, bacon, toast and two mounds of “I can’t believe they’re eggs” served with an ice cream scoop. It was disgusting, my friends were horrified at the sight of it and I decided it was a good time to skip breakfast.

So we’re driving down the Island Highway and arrive in Duncan where I used to live, we toured the town and I showed my friends my old house. It was lunchtime and we were getting a little peckish after that experience on the ferry. We stopped at a restaurant which bills itself as some kind of legendary place that I don’t remember when I lived there. I can’t remember the name but I want to make it perfectly clear as a warning to everyone: It’s on the Southwest corner of the Island Highway and Trunk Road.

They have an extensive menu, I chose the Rueben sandwich with potato salad; how could I go wrong? Well son of a bitch, the plate arrived in front of me with two mounds of “I can’t believe they’re potatoes” served with an ice cream scoop. My friends looked at it and said “You’re having a really bad food day, aren’t you?”, I concurred. I could smell the vinegar off the potato salad without even tasting it.

At least by the time we got to Victoria we met up with some friends and had a really nice meal in a very good restaurant. On the ferry back to Tsawwassen that night we decided not to eat and my friend Mike and I went on the outside deck and smoked a joint instead, while we cruised the straights with BC Ferries.

  • 12. Wandering Coyote  |  October 5, 2007 at 8:29 am

Yeah, the sunshine breakfast is gross. Also gross, the clam chowder. I can’t believe that when The White Spot took over the catering that they KEPT the fucking clam chowder! Never in my life have I ever had a more gritty soup. It’s like they HAVE to add sand to it for some reason. I noticed the last time I was on a ferry that as you come up the stairways onto the main deck, there’s this huge poster advertising the “famous clam chowder.” Do NOT be fooled, people! You might break a tooth on it!

  • 13. Bruce  |  October 5, 2007 at 9:08 am

I’ve had the clam chowder too, it’s just wrong. White Spot used to be so good but now they’re as bad as Denney’s if not worse.

  • 14. harpervalley  |  October 5, 2007 at 10:56 am

ross…..so, um, does said grandson have grandma’s recipe? better yet does he make nanaimo bars and send then in the mail to bowen island computer inmates 😀
loved your friends words….i read it in cockney.

jj….i can barely remember the sunshine breakfast. the occassional time we are in victoria we have breakfast BEFORE we board the ferry 🙂

looks like we’ll have to send bruce, coyote and jj out on a complete all inclusive package of b.c. ferries tours……write ups, reviews, we’ll call in sheena then expose the cafeteria for what it is – salmonella sandwhiches.

we can’t get meals aboard the queen of capilano save for hot dogs and in the last few months they introduced sandwhiches and wraps from the bread garden. they’re very decent but cost more (no wonder, the old sangies were two thinly sliced pieces of bread with a 1/4 tuna).

  • 15. Bruce  |  October 5, 2007 at 11:26 am

You just got my review, next time I go on a BC ferry, I’m packing my own.

  • 16. Wandering Coyote  |  October 5, 2007 at 4:06 pm

The Bread Garden product is ridiculously overpriced on the ferries. It’s highway robbery – on the high seas. Apart from the Nanaimo Bars, I pack my own food for the ferry ride, too.

  • 17. RossK  |  October 7, 2007 at 8:30 pm

I only send my best stuff to bloggerdivas who help me win their famous-not-so-smart-people contests…

  • 18. harpervalley  |  October 7, 2007 at 10:06 pm

bruce…..good thinking to pack your own. i just don’t usually get a meal time sailing, so my own water and something like granola bars or muffins gets toted along.

    coyote….agreed on the price!!!! sea-way robeerrry….argh, matey!

ross…..hmmmmmmmm, let’s see….i can cheat and get some fabulous nanaimo bars but live withthe guilt……or not cheat and live without the sugar. well buddy, looks like you’re on your own save if wandering coyote wants to tell you a big fat clue 😀 …..then coyote has to send a sample to me, how does that sound?
