THIS IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE TO READ …IT’S BEYOND DISTURBING AND LOOKS LIKE CANADA IS WEAPONS TESTING , POSSIBLY NUCLEAR, IN ONTARIO ON FIRST NATION TERRITORIES….THIS AFFECTS US ALL:

“MANHATTAN PROJECT” AT SHARBOT LAKE

MNN. July 9, 2007. It’s becoming more and more apparent
that we are being used as “guinea pigs” for research and
experimentation by government funded mad scientists from
around the world. Remember “agent orange”, “LSD”,
ammunition testing at Sarcee and Ipperwash? You’d think
people would know better by now and be decent. No way,
Jose! It’s vicious disgusting and as slimy as a crude oil
slick floating on a lake full of dead fish. Canada thinks we
are expendable. They carry out psychological and physical
testing of weaponry on our lands. They sit back and stare
at us through binoculars and microcopes to see how we
are going to react.

On Sunday July 8th 2007 at 3:00 pm. The Algonquins of
Sharbot and Ardoc Lakes protested the rape and violation
of their land by blocking Highway 7, which is 42 miles
north of Kingston Ontario. They want to stop “Frontenac
Ventures Corporation”, Mining Resource Engineering
Limited MREL, Natural Resources Canada and Indian Affairs
from digging for uranium at a former mine site near Ardoc
north of Sharbot Lake Ontario. All of this is on unsurrendered
Indigenous land. This whole venture is starting to smell more
and more like sulfur and other explosives as well as uranium
mining.

The Algonquins have been warned if they try to stop the
mining they will be arrested and sued by Frontenac Ventures.
They’ve heard that an injunction is going to be served on
them on Tuesday, July 10th. Since when have Canadian
courts given the “trespassers” injunctions against the land
“owners”? Since the 18th Century when it comes to our land.

Algonquin Chief Doreen Davis says the companies have
already destroyed their trap lines, beaver dams and beaver
ponds. They set up a gate across the only entrance to the
land refusing to allow the mining company to enter. They
want a moratorium on mining in the whole Ottawa Valley.

The mining company is planning to drain Crotch Lake to
get at the uranium easier. This concerns everyone. The
radioactivity can leech into the waterways and wells for
thousands of square miles around. There’s dust in the
air too. They want to scare people into moving away.
There’ve been a lot of unexplained arson and barn burnings
in eastern Ontario. Is this why?

On Monday, July 2nd the Algonquins sent three runners
from their encampment with a wampum to a nearby
Indigenous community asking for help. They briefly
explained the situation. The message was received by
the War Chief. A meeting was called.

On Tuesday July 3rd the Algonquins were expecting an attack
from the mining company, the workers or the OPP. They
returned home to protect their people.

The traditional people gathered in the sister community. The
war chief told the people, “They’re going to mine uranium up
there and it’s going to affect all of us whose waters will be
contaminated”. They decided to check it out.

The Men decided, “If drills are appearing and uranium
mining is starting, we’re ‘fucked’. Our water will be
dead. This mine will poison us too”.

On July 3rd Tuesday morning they went to Sharbot Lake to
find out what was going on. They saw that the Algonquins
needed to get ready for whatever might happen. The Canadian
Government wasn’t about to come in and shut down the
uranium mine just because the Indigenous did’nt want it.
In fact they probably gave out the permits. The Algonquins
told the visitors that “the OPP are here for our protection!”
The chief is an OPP officer. The liaison committee is made
up of OPP officers. The visitors became even more alarmed
about their safety.

OPP Cruisers were at both ends of the road and passing
by every 5 minutes. Some cruisers had video cameras.

The visitors advised the Algonquin they needed to conduct
the old way of forming a friendship by an exchange of words
and a feast, which they did. The war chief of the “Algonquins
of Ardoc and Sharbot Lake First Nations and Allies” is a very
old man. They had a pipe ceremony and decided to work
together.

The visitors cautioned, “If you believe you are going to be
attacked, you need medical supplies, escape routes and
more people around”. Shortly after that the cops surrounded
the visitor’s van. 5 officers were within 9 feet of them,
who checked out the license plate.

The visitors talked about the perimeters of the area and
then went back to their van. Some of the visitors decided
to go for a walk to look around. It was hills and swamps
with very few roads. They were trying to get a feel for
where the Algonquins were at.

They came back out of the bush. Then they decided to
look further into the woods to see what kind of threats
were there. The old war chief wanted to meet with them
at a trailer. He presented a wampum to indicate that the
visitors were now involved. The visitors’ war chief said he
was sent there to assess the situation and provide support
if necessary. They would take direction from the old war
chief and walk behind him solely as support and not to
take over in any way.

The visitors found out that the Algonquins wanted the
visitors to wear camouflage and to keep the OPP back.
The Algonquin seem to have felt intimidated by the OPP.
They were blocking two gates on the road. They agreed
to keep everything peaceful without militancy at any time.

They went back into the bush and investigated the back
road looking for a rear exit. The map showed no exits.
The Algonquins said there was none. The colonial authorities
would not let them go into that area of 50,000 acres of
Algonquin land being used for whatever. The first part of
the road was clean. It was groomed without culverts
designed for carrying heavy weight vehicles. It was
recently filled by super dump trucks with heavy rock and
heavy gravel on top.

It was five or six kilometers of extremely dense forest.
It was almost impossible to see 15 feet ahead or off the
road. On a smaller road they came to a gate that was
open and a sign that read, “Caution – exploding and blasting”.
About five minutes away was a second gate with lots of
signs indicating “Do not enter”, “Blasting”, etc.

They came to a small white building on the right side
with a chain link fence 9 feet high, with a lock on the
gate. Inside was a concrete building that looked like
a large pill box which was locked. In old paint that
was flaking off said the word, “Hazard”. They walked
in a little and found a concrete metal box about 3 feet
by 4 feet with the word “Warning” on it. There was no
lock on it. They opened it and found it empty.

The camp was four swamps in from the main gate.
The visitors said, “What the hell is this? We were
looking for equipment to use to maintain the safety
of the people and look what we find!”

They went further in. They came across another building
on the left with a giant 500 gallon diesel tank. To the left
were the signs “Warning Blasting”, “Do not enter” and
“Personnel only”.

They went off the main road to the right into the compound.

At the top of the hill there was a cement pad with big
stack of sandbags. The road came to a ‘T’. To the right
was a building. To the left the road continued into the
thick forest where they couldn’t see anything.

They investigated the building through the windows.
They saw big heavy machinery, lathes, steel presses
and glass fixtures all fit with protection from explosive
dust. Electrical power plug outlets were set up to be
fireproof. The building had two sections sealed off from
each other. There was a glass wall overlooking the
“weapons lab”. There was a table with unusual equipment
for “special jobs”. It was full of expensive equipment.
There were papers and notes on the desk outside the
room. There were safety goggles, an x-ray machine
and a radiation detection machine.

On top of one of the buildings was a periscope with a
revolving camera on it.

There were “designer” explosive chemicals with
a heavy smell of sulphur and ammonia. Some
of the explosives authorized for “manufacture and
storage” by Natural Resources Canada on an Indigenous
territory unknown to the inhabitants are: TNT,
Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine, cyclotetramethylenetranitramine;
Hexolite, Octolite, Pentaerythrite Tetranitrate, Pentolite,
Tritonal and Ammonium nitrate.

There was one locked door. Through the window they
could see a thick wall with a room. On the left was a
locked door. They went out through a side door.
Another door was opened up which looked like a bathroom
with a heavy chemical smell. Looking in they saw all kinds
of papers, beakers, measuring cups, an opened wooden
box containing a radiation machine and two other machines.
There were stickers with the words “Radiation Area“ on it.

The visitors decided to continue looking for an access road
in case they got flanked from behind. The small road looped
around. They came across a giant hole in the ground, 25
feet by 30 feet by 8 ft deep to the right of the building.

The equipment on the site was all brand new. Behind the
lab was another diesel tank. There was a water system
with a hot water tank. There were other concrete
pads and other roads around the site.

They came across a Cadillac and mini van blown up with
the doors out and the roof peeled up. The paint had not burned.

Further down the road was a 20 feet high concrete bunker
built between two hills. Three walls were covered by sand.
The door could be opened. Everything around was dead,
even the grass. The ground was covered by broken debris,
paint, glass, metal and parts of things. On top of the
concrete bunker were concrete blocks, glass and wood
targets. It looked like the end of the world. The observers
who reported what they saw were shivering.

Between the blown up cars and the concrete building were
strange metal stands. Laying beside them was a live round.
It was a bullet about 3 feet long, 6 inches in circumference.
There were about two or three more brass casings lying
beside them along with 8 or 9 war heads for the bullets
weighing about 5 pounds each.

They walked over to the other end of the area and saw
the same colored dirt in the hole which had recently been
spread on the ground. It looked like something was being
burnt. All the trees around were burnt. At the edge of the
burnt pile there was a shipping container. The center had
been exploded out and the doors were all bent. Some sort
of dark liquid that smelled like diesel fuel and a strange
whitish gray gel laid on the ground around it.

This looked like the edge of a dump. Some dirt was being
backfilled over the piles of targets. There were 12 feet by
12 feet square walls with metal legs about 1.5 feet thick.
These had 4 feet bullet holes in the center. There was a
lot of debris and pieces of cars laying at the base of the trees.

Further in they came to another clearing that went back into
the forest for 300 feet from the road. There was a gray car
there with a license plate. It had a strange device in the
back seat. There were six shipping container with turbines
on top all painted military green. “Explosives” was painted
on the sides of the containers.

The gravel on the road into this area was fresh with solid
blocks. The markings on the containers showed they had
passed from the U.S. through Canada Customs. The marking
labels showed they were shipped from “Lebanon”.

Another blown up container was surrounded by the same
dark gungy liquid on the ground. Gray barrels that were
twisted, torn and ripped up were littered about. They had
no burn marks. The insides were oily. It looked like they
had been shot, a big hole was created and the containers
had ballooned out. The hole was big enough to stand two
people inside.

The hunting cabin behind the area had nothing in it except
hunting maps. The gravel road ended and came
to a path. It got too rough. They decided to turn back.
They then found fresh 4 x 4 ATV tracks. We had been told
there was no access except through the front gate where
there were no 4 wheelers anywhere. The tracks showed
that the 4 wheeler marks had made a circle in front of
every building and all the offshoots.

The visitors thought they were stopping a mine and
that no drilling had been done yet. It turned out to be
somebody blasting for over 20 years and escalating it.

The government has told the Algonquins they don’t
know if there is any uranium in there. According
to the geothermal maps of Canada, it is a “hot spot”
and has the biggest uranium mine in Canada.

The visitors tried to make some calls unsuccessfully.
They went back to the front gate and stood around
with everyone. They greeted people in cars. Then
the Canadian government agents showed up in a fleet
of four or five white Chevy trucks. They had a meeting
with the OPP, who were part of the liaison group.
They were told about the visitors. They went into the
woods for 5 hours. Randy Coda, the chief and an OPP
officer, lead them in. He did not take them to the
munitions site.

In an abandoned building near the front gate where the
people were protesting a geiger counter went off. It was
supposed to be an abandoned gypsum or some kind of
rock factory owned by Peter Jorgensen. He said he
signed it over to George White who owns Frontenac
Ventures Corporation. Frontenac has mining and
explosive contracts from the federal government, Indian
Affairs, Environment and Ministry of Natural Resources.
Frontenac wants to sue the Algonquins for trying to
stop the uranium mining.

When the Algonquins asked if tailings were being dumped
here, the government said, “No”, they would not do that.
They told them they were concerned about people
staying in the area and suggested they move out.

Their suspicion is that nuclear power is being expanded
or sold outside of Canada. The government stated they
don’t know why the radiation levels are so high. They’ve
been testing nuclear weapons up there, that’s why! They
can’t afford to have people there because they’re going
to get sick. Is Canada getting “weaponed up” because
they think a world war is about to erupt?

Another problem is this is part of Six Nations territory.
The Algonquins are aware of it. The watershed from
the area goes in both directions. The government
purports that this is not their land. They should ask
us about that.

The company showed a video recently to the Algonquins
on how the water bombs are made. The pressure is so
high that it does not ignite. That was the bomb sitting on
a car that the visitors saw. A robot would put a water
bomb underneath the car and set it off so the car won’t
explode into a fire ball. What is the purpose of inventing
this kind of technology? It is obviously meant to kill people.
This is violation of international law which requires all
differences to be settled by open honest peaceful means.
No government has a legitimate need for car bombs.

These secret bomb making and uranium projects are
killing us off by contaminating our food, animals, fish
and environment. They said they were practicing to
use water bombs which can’t burn rocks. The visitors
saw scorched trees and rocks. Their argument is they
are helping Canada to fight the terrorists in Afghanistan.
Canada hired this company to build the weapons for
them.

Defense Research Canada operates 7 centres across Canada.
[Ottawa; Centre for Security Science with Public Safety &

CORA is a “psy ops” component. This looks like mind
control studies: analytical methods; critical reasoning;
decision-making methods; group system/brainstorming;
interdisciplinary teamwork; igorithms; modeling and
simulation; multi-criteria decision analysis; optimization;
qualitative & quantitative concepts; risk analysis;
and sociological and psychological analysis.

This “ology” and “ism” stuff sounds like a lot of B.S. but get
huge government contracts for political hacks. There’s
always lots of money for nonsense but none for
maintaining medicare, education or infrastructures
for ordinary honest citizens like roads and bridges.

We Indigenous have been used by the military
for a long time. It looks like there is a ‘Mengele’
in DND doing experiments on us and watching
how we react to chemical and psychological warfare.

Indian Affairs makes sure that we are seen as a
people who have no rights. They say we can’t
sue on our own behalf because we are their “wards”.
Could they be farming us out as human guinea
pigs to the U.S. or other governments that want
to do experiments on human beings? They did
this with our residential school kids to German
doctors in the 1930s. They don’t seem to have
any fears of being sued. Any claims would have
to go through a long process of negotiations.
Indian Affairs is very good at tying it all up for
generations.

Does this scare you? Is this the way people
expect the Canadian government to be spending
tax dollars? Has Canada been completely infiltrated
and taken over by a bunch of crazy “yahoos”!
Does it look like some questions surely need to be
asked?

Famous Stupid People # 24 Eat Bread Friday

  • 1. 900ft Jesus  |  July 11, 2007 at 8:26 am

Scout, you’re going to kill me, but I have a whole lot of questions about this issue. I looked for your e-mail link, but couldn’t find it – I’d rather ask some of these q’s through e-mail. It’s not idle curiosity pushing me.

This situation is horrifying and threatens our rights and freedoms in so many areas. People who brush this off as just another land dispute with disgruntled injuns are blind idiots – and bigots, of course. Adding to the fact that land disputes aren’t trivial, this case includes what looks like illegal weapons testing, testing on land not designated as such, access to information, closed door deals, denial of rights to any Canadian to contest land use, very serious, far reaching environmental issues, very serious health issues, land rights of owners affected by such “developments.”

First Founding Nations are protesting, and this certainly is a Native rights issue, but it is one that affects all Canadians – those who live in that area – Native and non-Native, and anyone who gives a damn about rights of Canadians.

That’s what some people don’t get: if you let the government stomp on the rights of one group, none but the very wealthy, highly connected folk are safe from such interference. Rights are set for all citizens in this country, and if they aren’t guarded absolutely and equally, behind-closed-doors decisions like the one you brought to our attention will continue and anyone who stands in the way of the interests of the elite members of these closed meetings is fodder. Allowing these events to go on unchallenged encourages a government of secrecy which places the economic interests of a few about the rights and freedoms of all.

By standing up for their rights over the weekend, the Algonquins help defend those of all Canadians. It may not have been their goal, but such actions often benefit a larger segment of Canadians. These other Canadians need to see this is also their fight.

What 900-foot Jesus said. The rights of one are the rights of all.

  • 3. harpervalley  |  July 11, 2007 at 10:03 pm

jj….it’s a pretty big thing here…i think everyone’s going to come together on this. wonder how many good ole white boys have cottages at sharbot lake??? they can support the cons all they like till something like this turns up in their backyard. hmmm…just got a flash of homer simpson working at the nuke plant 🙂

  • 4. Simon  |  July 12, 2007 at 9:48 pm

Wow!! What an amazing story. What a horror movie. What IS going on there? It’s scandalous how mining companies and others get away with poisoning places all over the country. It sound like this company is doing anti-IED research. With 75% of the U.S. casualties in Iraq caused by IED’s it’s a BIG business. They’ve gone from using so called water bottle disrupters to using new more penetrating fluids. The question is what are they? And are they testing these disrupters on simulated terrorist dirty bombs with real radioactivity?
To see if they could disrupt it without dispersing the dirty bomb part.. Just a guess…but as we become more and more of a cog in the American Military Industrial Complex anything is possible.
It sounds like we need an explanation… but I’m not holding my breath… 🙂

  • 5. harpervalley  |  July 12, 2007 at 10:17 pm

simon….ya, it’s pretty bad and makes you wonder what else is happening where. is this what all the pseudo hub bub in the artic is all about?i can’t rememmber who, maybe the galloping beaver….they had a post on the ships the government bought to patrol the artic and the ‘threatened border’ …….only they were ‘light’ ice breakers.

why light….for expected global warming speed up….or , more likely because it’s all a hoax so the military can pronouce more areas as off limts to all……like the military announcing that anyone who has anything to do with or promotes sovereignty is a terrorist and insurgent.

so they did this when they were there to open land belonging to the de cho for mining…..because the de cho were not allowing it.

but what now….with the u.s. senate approving being out of iraq by spring? will the president veto this then find his excuse for marshall law?

will the algonquins re-stage a blocade and lead mainstream media into the area?

  • 6. Toe  |  July 13, 2007 at 5:32 am

Is there any sort of online petition or open letter to sign? This looks like it could be a very long fight and must be challenged. A blockade to start.

  • 7. Jeanette  |  July 13, 2007 at 1:36 pm

As a property owner on Big Gull Lake I am VERY concerned for all who would be affected by this mining venture. Where on earth would you begin to recount all the possible devastating effects this would have. I agree with Toe, there should be an on line petition so anyone who wants to have a positive impact can! I’ll bet you lots of out-of-Canada property owners would be more than happy to sign. What would draing Crotch Lake do to those Lakes that drain in to it? And what impact would it have downstream? If you want to keep the tourist industry going and all the taxes paid by foriegn property owners they should think twice! That land is so beautiful. I have spent summers there since I was 10 and am now 55. I even walked the creek between Gull and Crotch once or twice. Too beautiful to destroy. I am not a member of any indiginous community, but they certainly have my support in their struggle. Now I know why so many OPP were visible between Sharbot and Gull 4th of July Weekend!

i am not aware of any online petition but there are people to email at the end of the article.

you can always start you own petition , there are several sites:
    http://www.ipetitions.com/

    http://www.petitiononline.com/create_petition.html

    http://www.petitionspot.com/

and no, you don’t have to be first nations to lend support and be a part of this.

you may also want to Sign Women Title Holders petition!
    http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/Iroquois

this must be extraordinarily upsetting for those who know the area and have a stake in it.

See, I was so upset that I didn’t catch the fact that I misspelled drainig! Thanks for all the great info. I remember when the Ardoch road was unpaved and you had to drive over a low spot that you could, some years, see and feel the logs laid down, and what we referred to as ‘the beeping hill’ because you needed to honk your horn in case there was someone coming from the other direction because they couldn’t see you and the road was very narrow! Thanks again for the web site info!

    and I did it again!

I was at the blockade last night. Two Algonquin groups are working together, supported by many non-natives. They welcome any kind of support, but want to keep it peaceful. That is very important, not only because of their beliefs, but because any violence could threaten what they are trying to accomplish.

They intend to continue blocking the entrance to the site, and continue with peaceful marches (the blockades are actually put up by OPP so traffic and walkers aren’t in the same place). HWY 7 was not blocked, just a section of 38.

As I said, any help is welcome. There is the Green event going on in Lanark this week, and the First nations have a table there. With their consent, we will start a petition. If anyone is good at getting on-line ones going, that would be great. I suck at that. With a petition, though, contact one of the people given by Scout in the sites listed, since accuracy of facts is very important. Some well meaning people have been distorting facts either through misunderstanding or to spark interest – or ust creative imaginations! This isn’t needed since the reality is in itself appalling.

This is Algonquin land, and no mining is allowed on Native land without their permission. They have not, and will not give permission. They have been working hard at building a fine, self-sufficient community there and want to continue.

That this is Native land is what will save private land owners from having a uranium mine destroy their environment. Land owners only have surface rights, which means that anyone can stake a claim on any land (except Native), strike a deal with the government, and mine. This is in the Mining Act. So if people in the area want the mine stopped, they need to support the Natives. You will hear that mining uranium is as safe as any other kind of mining, but they don’t tell you about the “tailings,” what’s left over after the mining, and that’s about 85% of the material. That’s what leaches into land and water. That area (Frontenac, Lanark) is a huge watershed, and the uranium waste will spread over a very large area.

Another problem the Algonquins are running into is that people think this is “just another case of Natives complaining about some bit of land.” I encountered this even in Perth, a neighbouring town. They were very surprised to hear about the mine. It’s being kept quiet, so any way of making people aware of this issue would be helpful. Government doesn’t want it out, and the press isn’t interested in covering peaceful protests. When contacted about the march yesterday, one paper said unless the place was surroounded by barbed wire, and it looked like things might get out of hand, there was no story.

I’m going to meet with the committee over the next few days, and I’ll keep you posted, if you are interested. Any ideas of how I should post this info, Scout? Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention!

Sis, this is sordid and underhanded beyond words…. I’m so upset that I can barely write… The deceit, lies, endangerment of people by our puppet government of the US regime has no bounds.

If anyone starts an online campaign, please post it up here. .. In the meantime, I’m going back to my site and put in a link to this post. This has to be told to the Canadian people!

    in spirit, sis annamarie

jeanette….not to worry, i didn’t catch your typo! ah yes, memory lane…please read 900 ft. jesus’ post…maybe there’s a way you can get out to the protest?

jesus…good on ya! and yes, peaceful, by all means.

annamarie…you said it all! thanks sis…it has to get out to the public….does everything have to be left to us bloggers now…guess so.

Just started a blog and I’ve put your article in. Disturbing is the correct word. Interesting the brainwashing we had in public school: we were taught Canada is a wholesome country concerned with freedom and peace. Well, something is rotten in Canada and it’s starting to make a big stink for those who are paying a bit of attention.

  • 18. harpervalley  |  July 16, 2007 at 10:23 pm

hi marc…many thanks. i’m afraid there’s been very disturbing things for quite some time now…..but people are starting to wake up…….harper, like him or not (who does) plays his role out in these prophetic times by forcing us to see. i can’t imagine what it’s like to be handed the ‘dark’ role in life…..but another few years and we’ll be done with that crap. as i say though, ‘buckle up, it”s going to be a rough ride’ till we break through.

Algonquin Alliance Statement Against Uranium Exploration and Mining

    July 24, 2007

On June 28, 2007 leadership and members of Ardoch Algonquin First Nation and Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation moved to secure the site of a proposed uranium mine in the traditional lands of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation near Ardoch Ontario. Frontenac Ventures Corporation, under the ownership of George White had been notified by mail to vacate the premises prior to the 28th with his equipment and staff. On the 28th members of the two Algonquin communities moved in and secured the site to prevent the drilling of uranium core samples which were slated to begin the following week.

Upon securing the site, the two communities established an alliance whose overall purpose was to prohibit access to the site and any proposed drilling within and around the site and all associated sites by Frontenac Ventures Corporation. The Algonquin alliance discovered through an initial search that multiple users had been granted access to the site and land surrounding the site by the MNR, Mining and Northern Development and private owners. At no time did any of these ministries or private owners contact or secure permission from Algonquin people to use the lands or resources in question. In fact, while Algonquin people in the area had heard rumours of a proposed uranium mine in Frontenac County, we were not aware of the plans to develop a mine on our traditional territory until Gloria Morrison, a private land owner in the region, attended a council meeting and asked for the Ardoch Algonquin council’s help in protecting her property. Gloria came to the meeting because 60 acres of her 100 acre holding had been staked by Frontenac Ventures under the Mining Act. She had exhausted all other alternatives at that point and hoped that Algonquin people could help her as she understood that the land she had purchased was in the historical territory of Algonquin people.

As already mentioned the overall purpose of the Algonquin alliance is to prohibit access to the site and any proposed drilling within and around the site and all associated sites. This includes sites that are privately owned and leased to Frontenac Ventures Corporation as this usage is against the Original Teachings and Guiding Principles which provide the guidance necessary to live within Mino-Pimaadiziwin (which means to live the good life, in a balanced way that promotes the sustainability of the Natural World and all living entities). The alliance is using a four-pronged approach to dealing with uranium exploration and mining which includes education of the larger community on the dangers of uranium exploration and mining and direct action in various locations in Algonquin territory to bring local, national and international attention to the issue. The two Algonquin communities who make up this alliance are also concerned with their responsibility as Anishinaabe people to examine prior usage of the land and resources by all users who have been granted access by the province of Ontario. Part of that strategy is to develop sound mechanisms for restoring balance to the land and waterways that have been impacted by their activities on the land and also create protocols of interaction that can be used with future users so that the same mistakes do not occur again.

The alliance also has to deal with the other users who were granted access to our territory through the province. One such user is MREL. MREL is a company that has moved heavily into the defence and security industry, and in particular the development of a range of vehicle disrupters which are used to neutralize improvised explosive devises and bomb laden vehicles, placed in anything from regular automobiles up to tractor trailer sized trucks. The units are robot deployed and designed to minimize collateral damage. The thrust of their work is humanitarian with an emphasis on saving lives, both by countering the threat of bombs in the civilian community, as well as to improve the defence capability of Canadian troops.

As MREL’s current contract is designed to save lives, and not connected to the drilling of core samples or uranium mining, the alliance has made the decision to permit MREL to enter the site under a memorandum of understanding between MREL and Ardoch and Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nations. The memorandum of understanding will cover only the current project related to their research on vehicle disrupters. It will cover the nature of required clean-up from previous MREL work, set out the protocols for relating to the land in a way that promotes balanced relationships with the land and waterscapes, while also enabling MREL to complete the project in the designated timeframe. Any other usage of the site by MREL would have to be renegotiated. The MOU will also address the issue of securing the site while MREL is conducting their research. MREL has also come out openly against George While and Frontenac Ventures Corporation and has provided the alliance with numerous documents, maps, and correspondence that supports our position against uranium mining.

The alliance is also concerned with a new tendency on the part of some individuals to treat this site as a tourist attraction. The articulation of our autonomy here is a serious issue for both Ardoch Algonquin First Nation and for Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation. We have secured the area for the sole purpose of preventing the drilling of core samples which would lead to the development of a uranium mine on our traditional territory. Securing the area means literally keeping everyone out unless they have been invited to enter at the main gate where the encampment is located. This policy is necessary to secure the safety of everyone, inside and outside the gate. The entire parameter has been secured through the use of warriors to prevent access to Frontenac Venture Corporation and no one should enter the site as you could be seen as working for FVC. This encampment and occupation of the surrounding land and watersheds is part of an ongoing resistance on the part of these two First Nations to resist the attempts of Frontenac Ventures Corporation to drill core samples, it should respectfully not be treated as a tourist attraction.

The Algonquin alliance and resistance force is being assisted by CCAMU, Mining Watch, and other environmental and citizenship groups who are opposed to uranium mining. Many of the individuals involved in the various groups have had their own property staked under the Mining Act by Frontenac Ventures Corporation. While Algonquin people are concentrating on direct actions that articulate our autonomy in the valley of the Kiji Sìbì (which is a necessary component in the overall efforts to prevent uranium exploration and mining on our traditional lands), our non-Aboriginal friends and neighbours have renewed ancient relationships with the Algonquin people and communities here and have taken up once again their side of the wampum belt that was neglected long ago by their ancestors. Their efforts to create and disperse important information on the Mining Act and impacts of uranium mining have gone a long way in gaining outside support for our struggle to stop Frontenac in their tracks. Our non-Aboriginal neighbours have also created a network of support for the Algonquin and other Aboriginal communities who remain on the site behind the gate. This network of concerned friends and neighbours have taken it upon themselves to make sure that the people who remain there have the food, supplies, and necessities needed to maintain the occupation until a positive resolution can be achieved. Both Algonquin communities, as well as the other Aboriginal people at the site greatly appreciate the dedication and sacrifices made by everyone who has supported and continues to support our efforts to stop the proposed uranium exploration and mining on Algonquin land and that of our neighbours.

    Direct Action

The alliance has taken several direct actions in the past few weeks to draw attention to the issue including two protest marches down Highway 7 in Sharbot Lake. The next direct action will take place on July 28 in Perth. Those wishing to participate in the action should meet at the lot behind Wendys at 3pm. This particular action will take place at two spots on Highway 7. There will be pylons inserted into the middle of the road to slow it down to two lanes. We will be setting up information tolls at each end of Perth on Highway 7. Cars will be allowed to travel but at a much slower pace which will permit us to provide info on the issue and also ask for donations which are needed to sustain the resistance force at the site and to pay for legal fees. We will need volunteers to stand at each end of the highway with picket signs and eight people to work the information toll. We will maintain the information toll from 3pm-6pm. We will continue to plan such actions on Highway Seven moving next to Carleton Place and eastward……eventually reaching Ottawa if necessary.

    Legal Strategy

The Algonquin alliance has secured the legal services of Chris Reid, who is an expert on Aboriginal rights and law. Chris is working from the legal standpoint that Algonquin people never surrendered our lands and thus our autonomy and jurisdiction remain intact in the areas in which Frontenac Ventures Corporation has staked and plans to drill core samples. The details of that strategy need to remain confidential, but we will keep you updated on the progress made.

    Response from Frontenac Ventures Corporation

Frontenac Ventures Corporation has responded to our protest in a variety of ways, including issuing a statement in the Globe and Mail wherein Frontenac’s CEO George White suggested that perhaps companies in Canada should utilize paramilitary forces such as those used in Africa (if you have seen Blood Diamond you will get the idea) to protect mining interests from people such as ourselves, which he equated with terrorism. In a meeting held last week, White’s lawyer said several nasty things about our Mohawk allies and asked point blank if there were Mohawk warriors on the premises. White also promised swift legal action against us at that meeting and has followed through with that threat as we have been told that he has filed a 77 million dollar law suit against the two Algonquin communities here and their associated leaders. While a security force showed up at several points today trying to serve the notice, no one accepted it and they will now deliver it to our legal team which is being led by Chris Reid out of Toronto.

    Fundraising

Given the length of time we will need to maintain the occupation of our lands and the nature of the legal issues, we will need to implement and maintain various fundraising initiatives and activities over the next few months. Frank Morrison, who alerted us to the activities of Frontenac Ventures Corporation, is in the process of organizing a major benefit concert to take place in Carleton Place which will help in that regard, as will the one that is scheduled for Weds in Sharbot Lake. If you are not able to come and stand with us on the ground here please get involved in organizing fundraising activities to support our efforts here and what will be undoubtedly a lengthy and costly legal battle. All funds raised can be dropped off at the gate or mailed to 1045 Canoe Lane Ardoch, ON. Please specify that mailed funds go to fight uranium mining and the efforts of the Algonquin people occupying the site. If you are not able to get involved in the organization of fundraising activities, please consider dropping off or sending in your donation to support this important issue. Uranium exploration and mining will destroy our traditional territory and make it impossible to live off the land or to maintain our responsibilities to the land and waterways. We are doing this for the benefit of your children and grandchildren, so that they will have a future as Algonquin people.

    CHI-MIIGWECH!
